Nathan Northup was born the first child of George and Hannah (Clarke) Northup
on 11 Jun 1817 in Eden Hollow, Erie, Ny. I recently received an abundance of additional information on this interesting
man from Mae Colwell Northup, and I will share it here. Nathan died 10 Feb 1891 in Audubon, Ia. (Mae says he was aged
74 yrs, 7 months and 11 days. If her information is correct, he would have been born 30 June 1816.)
Nathaniel Northup worked on a boat on the Great Lakes (as a fireman) for a while before moving to Ohio with
his father. He left Ohio and moved west to Nebraska-Iowa prior to 1856. He and his two wives had 22 children.
Information is listed on 19 of them.
Nathan took his family to Iowa County, Iowa. While there, he joined the Civil War. In 1869, they moved to Tecumseh,
Nebraska, where they homesteaded 160 acres that was a Patent from the United States –signed by President Grant.
In 1874, the grasshoppers came and stripped all the crops. With the hard times, they had to sell the land and they moved
back to Iowa County, Iowa in late 1876. Nathan and family went to Audubon County, Iowa in 1881, settling on a farm of 180
acres in Douglas Township where he spent the rest of his life. Nathan was a blacksmith by trade. Nathan and Harriet are
buried at Audubon, Iowa
Nathan Northup's page is under construction. Please check back often for updates.
